Root Canal Treatment for Baby Teeth

A "root canal," or endodontic therapy, is a procedure available to save a tooth that is infected and would otherwise require extraction. There are many reasons that teeth can become infected, including: cavities, decay, cracks and trauma. At Orthodontics Pediatric Dentistry - OPDSF we offer Root Canal Treatment as an option to save your child's primary teeth.

Root canal therapy is needed when the nerve of a tooth is affected by decay or infection. In order to save the tooth, the pulp (nerve and blood supply), bacteria and any decay are removed, and the resulting space is filled with an inert material called gutta percha. After the tooth is healed, getting a crown is recommended, because the tooth will become brittle.

When completing toot canals on primary teeth, our doctors will use one of the following techniques:
•  Indirect Pulp Treatment
This treatment involves removing the majority of decay that may affect the tooth and then applying an antibacterial solution to seal the tooth and protect it against additional decay. A temporary filling will be placed on the tooth and replaced with a permanent filling after some time to heal.
•  Direct Pulp Capping
Similar to the Indirect Pulp Treatment, a pulp capping closes the exposed decay sealing it from exposure.
•  Pulpotomy or Pulpectomy
Pulpotomies and Pulpectomies involve complete removal of the decay in the tooth, and subsequent capping with a crown. The process for this procedure will be determined after a consultation with our dentists.
