Dental Milestones for Children
The first milestone is the eruption of your child's baby teeth. This typically happens between four and six months of age. This is also when you should schedule the first dental appointment for your child.
The second milestone is the end of bottles and the sucking of your child's thumb, plus your child beginning to brush their own teeth. This is a big one, as it sets the stage for future dental health. This one needs to be watched for carefully, and the age for this depends totally on the child.
The third milestone is when your child has a mix of baby and permanent teeth. After losing some of their baby teeth, your child's mouth undergoes changes, and these changes need to be monitored by your child's dentist.
Finally, the fourth milestone is having all permanent teeth through the eruption of your child's wisdom teeth. This can happen from the late teen years through their early twenties.
Keep in regular contact with your child's dentist to make sure your child is meeting each of their milestones. They are important, and show a lot about how a child is developing overall. Contact our office if you believe they are having a problem with any of these milestones, and they can take a look at your child's mouth to be sure.
